This piece started as a round of beautiful sea blue/green glass. It was layered with peacock green, white, and black powders, then finished with an overlaid black and white pattern that brings to mind a traditional thatch weaving design. With the patterning design complete, the piece was kiln-formed with a mold into the final bowl shape and displayed with its own black metal display stand.
You may be interested to know that the term Maloca has a very unique historical meaning, and Wikipedia says it best: "A maloca is an ancestral long house used by indigenous people of the Amazon, notably in Colombia and Brazil. Each community has a maloca with its own unique characteristics." This bowl with its underlying patterns like radiating support beams and overlaid thatch pattern, seems to be its own kind of Maloca, therefore the name.
