Madonna and Child of the Stars Icon II

Madonna and Child of the Stars  II was influenced by Orthodox Christian art, particularly Ethiopian and Coptic Egyptian art with its simplified lines and rich patterns. This piece is an icon-like but contemporary art piece which invites the viewer to contemplation. The details, such as the designs on the garments, are achieved by using sandblasting on flashed* glass to expose the under layer of the glass. The facial features and other details are painted with enamel paints that are kiln-fired for permanency. Size: 12" x 9 ", 14.5" x 11.5" framed

*Flashed glass consists of a thin layer of a deep color layered over a thicker layer of clear glass. The thin top layer is sandblasted in some places to remove it, revealing the contrasting color beneath. The sandblasted pieces are kiln-fired to give a matte polish to the sandblasted areas.
